The Château Laville Bertrou plots lie on an exceptional terroir in the heart of the Minervois-la-Livinière appellation. Facing due south and enjoying a semi-arid Mediterranean climate, this high-altitude vineyard produces powerful, distinctive and harmonious wines, in the tradition of Languedoc’s great wines.

Château Laville Bertrou Grand Vin is made from a selection of the estate’s best plots, at an altitude of around 120 metres on a mosaic of exposed marl, calcareous sandstone and compact limestone dating from the Eocene. This unique terroir naturally limits yields and, thanks to the vines’ deep roots, helps them withstand water stress while encouraging the grapes to ripen slowly and fully. The result is a concentrated wine of character, with a remarkable balance of power, freshness and elegant oak notes.

Winemaking

• The vineyard is cultivated at a density of 5,000 to 6,500 vines/ha, with yields controlled at around 30 hl/ha.
• Grapes are harvested by hand at full ripeness and transported to the cellar in grape-picking tubs.
• Each grape variety is vinified separately to preserve its individual characteristics.
• Carignan is placed in vats and vinified as whole bunches.
• The Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre are destemmed, then traditionally vinified and macerated under temperature control.
• Gentle pumping over, guided by daily tastings, to bring out the tannins and aromatic character to best effect.
• After malolactic fermentation, the wines are blended, then aged for 12 months, mostly in barrels and the rest in vats.
• Light filtration before bottling.
