The Bertrand family
Gérard Bertrand’s expertise
The expertise of Gérard Bertrand, a winegrower from the Languedoc and Roussillon who owns 16 châteaux, wine estates and Grand Vin.
The story of a family passion for vines
Above all, Gérard Bertrand wines are a family story.
Three generations of winegrowers, from Paule to Georges and then Gérard Bertrand.
In 1920, Paule Bertrand planted the family’s first vines in the Corbières. Those Carignan vines are now hardy centenarians.
In 1975, Georges Bertrand introduced his son Gérard, then ten years old, to grape harvesting at Château de Villemajou in the Corbières. Georges Bertrand played a pioneering role in bringing the Languedoc’s terroirs to wider attention and worked to secure recognition for the Boutenac cru.
For more than 30 years, Gérard Bertrand has shared his passion for winegrowing, his convictions and his father’s pioneering spirit.
A fourth generation is preparing to take over. Gérard Bertrand shares his rare talent for blending with his team. This unique expertise is passed on and nurtured together with his wife Ingrid and their two children, Emma and Mathias.
Biodynamics
The practice of biodynamics
Gérard Bertrand and his teams believe that viticulture in harmony with nature is the best way to bring terroir-driven wines to the highest level of excellence. This approach produces wines that express every nuance of the terroirs of southern France.
Biodynamic farming is akin to homeopathy for the vine. It uses compost and biodynamic herbal infusions. Biodynamics takes into account all the natural elements surrounding the vine and draws on cosmic rhythms.
The estates’ conversion to biodynamic farming began in 2002 at Domaine de Cigalus. Today, all the vineyards are farmed biodynamically in accordance with DEMETER standards. By 2023, all his vineyards will have completed their conversion to certification, benefiting nature, vineyard teams and wine consumers
The values of the Gérard Bertrand group
Excellence, Innovation, Naturalness and Togetherness
At each of his estates, Gérard Bertrand has created exceptional wines from individual plots chosen from among the finest terroirs in the Languedoc. Selected for their exceptional grape-growing and climatic conditions, these plots stand alongside the great crus of southern France, expressing the very essence of Languedoc terroir.
Innovation is a guiding principle for the Gérard Bertrand group. Listening to consumers is essential to meeting their needs and finding a wine for every occasion. Gérard Bertrand wines offer enthusiasts new experiences and moments that enrich the time they share together. Innovation also extends to packaging: the Cote des Roses range, for example, combines creative, high-end design with exceptional wine.
Occitanie is France’s largest organic wine-growing region, accounting on its own for 36% of France’s organic vineyards and 7% of the world’s. It has all the conditions needed for organic viticulture. Its geographical location, warm and windy Mediterranean climate, and wide variety of resilient grape varieties make it easier to combat pests in the vineyards. A pioneer of biodynamics in his vineyards, Gérard Bertrand wants to support winegrowers committed to protecting the environment and inspire a shift towards organic farming.
Gérard Bertrand and his teams aim to celebrate the Art De Vivre and forge connections between the estates’ fine wines, gastronomy, art and people who love coming together. Château l’Hospitalet, in the heart of the protected La Clape massif, perfectly embodies the Mediterranean Art de Vivre. A biodynamically farmed wine estate, Château l’Hospitalet is also a leading destination for wine tourism on the Mediterranean coast.
