Article: Ballerine for Candlemas

Ballerine pour la Chandeleur

Ballerine for candlemas

According to historians, the celebration of Candlemas, or the "Festival of Candles", has its roots partly in a pagan fertility cult from antiquity. The event took place in a cave in Rome in mid-February, around the time of the first sowings, to celebrate Saturn around the winter solstice.

According to popular belief, peasants would walk through the fields carrying torches to purify the earth before sowing. It was also said that the year's flour would go to waste if it was not used for Candlemas crêpes. The eating of crêpes is therefore seen as a tribute to the rebirth of nature, to the cycle of the seasons, and more specifically to the coming of spring.

Many traditions linked to crêpes have emerged, particularly in France. One of them involves holding a gold coin in one hand while tossing a crêpe into the air from its pan. An elegant, unfolded landing of the batter is said to be a good omen for the household's finances. Furthermore, the most superstitious will keep the first crêpe in a cupboard, where it is believed to attract good luck.

For us, Candlemas is above all an opportunity to gather as a family around mum's crêpes. And what better occasion to open a bottle of Ballerine. Its refined elegance and aromas of red fruits, brioche and flowers will pair perfectly with your crêpes, whatever the recipe.
