Wine description
Villemajou takes its name from "Villa Major": the Roman villa that owes its reputation to the Latin poet Apollinaire. Acquired by Georges Bertrand in 1973, it is the family birthplace, where Gérard learned the craft of winemaking from his father. The Boutenac cru is characterised by a hilly landscape and deep soils of rolled pebbles, allowing old Carignan vines to withstand the arid and windy climate of this terroir.

Food & Wine pairings suggested by our chef
Château de villemajou Grand Vin White: To enjoy with pan-fried scallops, fish in sauce or as an aperitif.
Winemaking and ageing
White: The grapes, harvested by hand, undergo pneumatic pressing with separation of the pressings as soon as they arrive at the winery. The entire juice undergoes alcoholic fermentation in new French oak barrels (temperature control preserves freshness and the integrity of the aromas). Barrel ageing lasts between 7 and 8 months until the spring equinox, with regular stirring of the lees (bâtonnage).
Red: The remarkable quality of this cuvée lies in the exceptional quality of the old Carignan and Syrah vines. Harvesting is manual and begins when optimal berry ripeness is reached. Part of the Syrah and Carignan undergoes whole-bunch maceration. Traditional maceration is carried out on the other grape varieties. The wines are blended after malolactic fermentation, then aged in 225-litre Bordeaux barrels in our cellar for 12 months. The wine is then aged for a further 12 months before being released for sale.
Tasting note
Château de Villemajou Grand Vin white: Golden, brilliant, fairly deep yellow colour. Very expressive nose of sublime depth, aromas of dried apricot, toasted almond, very floral fragrance of hawthorn and broom. Full and unctuous palate, round, very velvety and brioche-like. Taut finish with great freshness. Château de Villemajou Grand Vin red: With a deep garnet colour, Château de Villemajou reveals notes of toasted bread, liquorice and clove, offering powerful and elegant aromas of stewed fruit, gentle spices, leather and roasting.
